To allow yourself to feel, before you attempt to communicate with someone else's emotions.
To cry before you address the needs of a crying child.
To feel their pain, and respect its nature and power, and understand its source origin (or at least attempt to), before you begin to attempt to interact with it and to try and convert that energy into something less destructive to the self, and more healing (lest you absorb that pain, or destroy them or a part of yourself in the process of attempting to heal).
